Dr. Mike, as a parent, I want to believe that this new way of doing math is going to be effective. I also want to partner with the school & teachers as they administer this new way of teaching this subject.

However, my son, who is in Gr 4 this year has struggled to wrap his mind around the way the instruction is carried out. I believe he grasps the math concepts (he's getting right answers throughout), but when asked to explain them, he struggles because he cannot find the right words to convey his understanding. Then, unfortunately, even though he has the right answer to the question, he is docked value (or number of correct responses) in the final 'grade'/evaluation because he cannot explain why he got the right answer. Dr. Mike, that is just one item that we as parents are trying to understand.

Do you know of a resource that would explain this 'new math' concept in a way that even a parent would understand?
